Mesa State College football team has been picked to finish fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll announced earlier today at the RMAC Football Media Day in Colorado Springs.

The Mavericks placed two players on the All-RMAC Preseason Team led by senior offensive lineman Ryan Swope (Castle Rock, CO) and senior outside linebacker Spencer McAdoo (Broomfield, CO).

Swope started six games last season at center before an injury cut the season short. A force up front for the Mavericks, Swope will anchor the offensive line in his final season. As a sophomore Swope was named All-RMAC third team.

McAdoo played in all 11 games as a junior and recorded 37 tackles, six for loss yardage, finished with 2.5 sacks and two pass breakups. He recorded six tackles in three separate games last year versus Western New Mexico, Colorado Mines and Western State. McAdoo played in all 11 games as a sophomore and 12 games as a freshman. He earned All-RMAC Honorable Mention his freshman year.

The Mavericks finished 5-6 overall and 5-4 in league play in 2009. MSC received 41 points in the preseason poll. Defending RMAC Champion University of Nebraska Kearney (11-2 overall, 9-0 RMAC) is picked to repeat receiving six of the 10 first place votes (12 total points). Colorado Mines (8-3, 8-1) received three first place votes and is picked second. Chadron State (7-4, 6-3) is picked third and CSU-Pueblo (7-4, 6-3) received one first place vote and is picked to finish fourth. Adams State, Western State, New Mexico Highlands, Western New Mexico and Fort Lewis are picked sixth through tenth respectively.

RMAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year is junior running back Rustin Dring from University of Nebraska Kearney. Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Colorado Mines senior defensive end Marc Schiechl and senior defensive tackle Josh Rohde  from University of Nebraska Kearney. Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year is Adams State’s kicker, David Van Voris.

The Mavericks return 12 starters (offense-7, defense-5), from a year ago. MSC opens the 2010 on the road, Thursday, September 2 at Missouri Western University.  The Mavericks open conference play at University of Nebraska Kearney, Saturday, September 18. MSC’s first home game is September 25, versus New Mexico Highlands.
