With last year behind them, the Mesa State men’s varsity soccer team is looking to come back from a season that was impacted by several injuries. This year 35 players tried out for the team and as the preseason wraps up the team is starting to take shape.

The Mavs goal for this season is to get better every practice and play to their full potential. In the latest poll the mavericks are listed to finish 5th in their conference. This Mavericks team looks to redeem themselves by competing with a full roster and become a strong and cohesive team. MSC wrapped up preseason by shutting out the Black Stars from Denver 2-0.

The Mavericks depth at goaltending was outstanding along with its offense and defense. Mesa's offense kept the ball in the Black Stars territory a majority of the game while the defense proved to be a stronger force to mess with. With the Mavericks working at all cylinders they were able to pull off a victory.

MSC will open the regular season September 3rd at Colorado Christian University. MSC will play its first home game September 13 at 7 p.m. when they host Seattle Pacific University at Walker Field Stadium.

News and Notes:

Mesa State Club Soccer

Mesa State club soccer team started three years ago and is growing in numbers each year. This season 52 athletes tried out for the team, the most of any other year. The club team is an opportunity for athletes who tried out for varsity and didn’t make it to continue to play soccer at a competitive level. Being on the club team also allows an athlete to improve their skills and also develop new ones. The team travels to other colleges around Colorado and competes against club level teams. The club team is a competitive aspect more than intramural, but less than varsity. The ultimate goal for the Mesa States club soccer team is to win a national championship. For more information on club sports visit the MSC Club Sport web site.
