MEN’S/WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
47 student-athletes commit for fall 2010

Head men’s/women’s swimming and diving coach Brian Pearson is pleased to announce 47 student-athletes have committed to attend Mesa State College this fall. The women’s program enters its sixth year as an inter-collegiate varsity sport and the men’s program just wrapped up its inaugural season this past spring.

The women’s team adds 17 student-athletes including Coach Pearson’s first international recruit, Stephanie Cook from Ottawa, Canada. The class includes junior college transfer Deanna Pickman from Ventura JC where she qualified for the California State Junior College Championships. Freshman Shelby Bodine (Caldwell, ID) and Briana Purkipile (Parker, CO) should make an immediate impact in the sprint freestyle and middle distance freestyle respectively. Texas natives Katie Thompson (Texarkana) and Samantha Parker (Houston) will add depth to the middle distance freestyle group.

MSC’s men’s team includes 30 commitments from 13 different states and one international student-athlete.  The Mavericks added depth in all areas, with a strong class of newcomers in the middle distance and sprint categories. Three of the 29 will dive for the Mavericks led by Liam Acosta from Oceanside, CA.

Middle distance swimmers include  two-time Wyoming State Champion Alec Anderson (Green River, WY). He was a sectional qualifier in seven events his senior year.  Jakob Matthiessen (Omaha, NE) is a four-time state qualifier and 200 freestyle finalist. Shane Seuscheck (West Chicago, IL) is a multi-talented swimmer with sprint/middle distance experience and individual medley potential.

Jimmy Albertson (Pleasant Hill, CA) is the Mavs first junior college transfer (Diablo Valley College) qualifying for the California Junior College Championships in 2009 and 2010. An All-American selection he brings instant collegiate experience.

Sprint/backstroke specialists include Rob Eisendrath (Las Vegas, NV), Heath Eustance (Missoula, MT) and Mike Hudson (Laramie, WY). Eisendrath’s experience in the IM shows his versatility and work ethic. Eustance’s times at Shasta Junior College will make him an immediate competitor in the RMAC. Hudson is one of three student-athletes from Laramie. Hudson is a state champion in the 100 backstroke as well as the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay.

Andrew Gibbons (Dunwoody, GA) and Colorado native Justin White (Castle Rock) will instantly add credibility to the Mavericks sprint teams. Gibbons’ times will put him in national qualifying standards and White was a state qualifier out of Highlands Ranch High School.

MSC will showcase their talent on Friday, September 24 at the El Pomar Natatorium on the campus of MSC in the Maroon & Black Pentathlon at 2:00 p.m.
