Mavs to play St. Edwards (TX) in round one
Mesa State men’s tennis earned its first ever berth to the NCAA Division II Championship with a 5-1 win over St. Cloud State Saturday in the final round of the Central Regional Tournament at the Elliott Tennis Center on the campus of Mesa State College.
MSC will advance to the 2010 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships as one of 16 teams to qualify to play at the Sanlando Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, FL. May 12-15.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in doubles with victories at number one and three doubles. Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza (#1) defeated Aaron Johnson and Shane Ecklund 8-2. The Mavs number three team of Andres Hernandez and Brason Hollabough posted an 8-6 win over Joao Orsi and Jeremy Thompson.
In singles action Rashad Khamis (#2) gave the Mavs a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kevin Bauleke. At number six singles Niko Carrizo pushed the Mavericks lead to 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Lee Olson. Minutes later, senior Nick Provenza (#4) clinched the dual victory in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jeremy Thompson 6-1, 6-3.
The Mavs were leading in the three remaining matches, each up a set and leading in the second set.
Head Coach Dan MacDonald, Assistant Coach Davey Smith and the team will leave for Altamonte Springs, FL on Monday evening.
