Mesa State women’s tennis team moved one step closer to the “Sweet 16” with a 5-1 win over Winona State in the semi-final round of the NCAA DII Central Region Tournament in St. Cloud, MN.
MSC will play St. Cloud Friday at 9:00 a.m. (MST) with the winner advancing to the NCAA Championships in Altamonte Springs, FL., May 12-15.
MSC took a 2-1 lead capturing victories at #2 and #3 doubles. Kaitlan and Kelleen Sera (#2) defeated Amanda Asche and Laura Lindstrand 8-3. MSC’s #3 team of Amber Armendarez and Cyndle Curfman posted an 8-4 win over Laura Roesslein and Addison Adler. Winona’s #1 doubles team of Mary Hesterman and Heather Pierce defeated MSC’s #1 team of Victoria Sargent and Kate Lowder 8-3.
In singles action #2 Kate Lowder defeated Amanda Asche 6-3, 6-1 and Kaitlan Sera won 6-3, 6-3 over Addison Adler at #4 singles. MSC clinched the dual match with #5 singles player Amber Armendarez defeated Katelyn Dubbelde 6-0, 2-6, 6-0, giving the Mavericks the 5 points necessary to win the dual.
Kelleen Sera (#1), Victoria Sargent #3 and Cyndle Curfman #6 matches were suspended when the match was clinched.
The match was played at Gold’s Gym Tennis Center in Sartell, MN due to poor weather conditions. The championship match against St. Cloud State Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. (MST) will be played at Gold’s Gym Tennis Center.
St. Cloud State, the number one seed, received a bye in the three-team pod.
