Mesa State freshman Alexis Skarda placed seventh in the 5000 meter run Saturday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Charlotte, N.C. The race was scheduled to run preliminaries Friday night was cancelled due to lightening.
Skarda ran the race in a time of 16:41.26, setting a new MSC record, breaking her own school record of 17:22.06, she set earlier in the year. Her seventh place finish in a field of 19 was tops among freshman; she was one of just three freshman in the 5000 meter race.
Neely Spence, a sophomore from Shippensburg was the race in a time of 16:14.23.
Skarda’s outstanding performance garnered the Mavericks two team points, placing 57th at the NCAA national tournament. Skarda was the only Maverick to qualify for the outdoor national tournament.
