Haleigh Higgins, Krista Hilverding, Kelley Johnson,
Sarah Kemp and Rebecca Sellers
to join Mesa State Volleyball this fall

Mesa State College Volleyball Coach Dave Fleming announced he has signed five student-athletes during the latest NCAA signing period.  "We are very excited about this class.  We have very big shoes to fill with the graduation of Bria Lovato, Ali Tompkins, Tessa Andrews and Meredith Dolny.  With time and hard work, this class will do a great job in representing Mesa State and what we are trying to accomplish as a program,” said Coach Fleming.

Haleigh Higgins is a 5-11 Outside Hitter/Setter from Palisade, Colorado, Central High School and Colorado Thunder Volleyball Club.   “Haleigh is a great athlete and one of the best, if not the best volleyball student-athlete to come out of the Western Slope this year.  Haleigh could compete at both the outside hitter and setter position and she has very good back court skills.  We are not sure where Haleigh is going to fit in, but once she finds her role she will have a big impact on this program.”  Her 2009 Accomplishments include.  SWL Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, All State and she participated in the Colorado High School All-State match.

Krista Hilverding is a 6-0 Outside Hitter/ Middle Blocker/Right Side for Westminster, Colorado, Pomona High School & Denver Volleyball Club.  “Krista has the size and ability to play any front row position.  She had surgery to repair a torn ACL in February and should be cleared to play by August.   Before her injury I felt like she was as an immediate impact player and we will see where she is in August.  It might take some time but Krista will be very good player for us.”  Krista’s 2009 accomplishments include participation in the 2009 Colorado High School All-State match, First Team All-Conference, All-State and Team Captain.

Kelley Johnson is a 6-2 Middle Blocker from Windsor, Colorado, Fossil Ridge High School and NORCO Volleyball Club.  “Kelley is a smart middle blocker with a very high ceiling.  If she continues to improve as much as she has in the last year she could push to play right away.”   Kelley’s 2009 accomplishments include; Team Captain, Academic All-State, All-Conference, All-Area, All-State Second Team, Athlete of the Week (Fort Collins Coloradoan), Voted Female Athlete of the Year (FRHS) and participated in the Colorado High School All-State match.

Sarah Kemp is a 6-0 Outside Hitter from Bellevue, Nebraska, Bellevue East High School and Premier Volleyball Club.  “Sarah is a very good 6 rotation outside hitter.  She was recruited by Division I schools, some in last year’s AVCA Top 25.  She has the potential to step in right away and make an impact as an outside hitter.  She is a very solid blocker, passer attacker and defender.”     Sarah’s 2009 accomplishments include; Bellevue East Player of the Year, All Metro, First Team All-State and First Team Super State.

Rebecca Sellers is a 6-1 Outside Hitter/Right Side Hitter for Medford, Oregon, Cascade Christian High School and mOcean Volleyball Club.  “Becca is another very good 6 rotation outside hitter that has experience on the right side.  Becca is a great passer and defender with good size and was a soccer player growing up and moves well.  She will compete right away for a starting spot on the outside.”  Rebecca’s High School accomplishments include 2009 First Team All-Conference, First Team All-State, First Team All-State Tournament and Two-time Conference Player of the Year.

“Recruiting could not have gone any better this year.  With all that President Foster, Butch Miller and the Board of Trustees have done at Mesa State it is becoming much easier to recruit top level student-athletes.”   The five incoming freshmen will be joining 12 returning Mavericks, and Junior College transfer Celset Alofipo.  The Mavs will begin their fall campaign at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colorado on September 3rd versus Augustana.
