Mesa State softball team earned a berth to the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Regional Tournament and will participate in the Central Regional bracket hosted by Metro State College May 14-16 in Colorado Springs. The NCAA made the announcement of the 64 teams early Monday morning. It is the seventh time MSC has been selected to play in the NCAA DII regional tournament. It is the second consecutive season MSC has earned a regional berth (2009, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1998, and 1997). In 2000 MSC advanced to the Elite National Tournament in Columbus, Georgia.
This is the second year the NCAA has implemented a 16-regional tournament format. Four teams will compete in double-elimination tournaments with the winners advancing to the super regional May 21-22. Metro State (#1 seed central region) will host one of the two central regional tournaments and Wayne State will host the central region-2 bracket. Metro will host the tournament in Colorado Springs.
MSC (23-20) enters the tournament as the no. 4 seed and play host Metro State (46-4) Friday, May 14, at Noon. No. 2 seed Minnesota State Mankato (32-13) will play No.3 seed Winona State (35-12) Friday at 3:00 p.m.
Host Wayne State (NE) (40-2) will play Minnesota Duluth (32-15). Augustana (S.D.) (42-10) will face Concordia-St Paul (34-15).
The NCAA Division II championship will be held May 27-31 at Heritage Park in St. Joseph, Missouri, hosted by Missouri Western State University.
