On Saturday April 10th the Mesa State Mavericks continued their spring season with games against Fort Lewis College and Weber State College. In the game one the Mavericks hosted Ft. Lewis defeating the Skyhawks 2-1 for their first ever victory against their RMAC foe. It was an exciting game that saw the Mavs and Skyhawks split possessions in the first half, with MSC creating more dangerous scoring opportunities.  Mesa State pressured the Skyhawks into an early mistake that resulted in a goal from Andy Cornia. Cornia nearly doubled the lead but a great save from Ft. Lewis’ goalkeeper kept the game at 1-0.  Another important save was made when defender Mitchell Reid found himself one-on-one with the FLC goalkeeper, only to be denied.  The half ended 1-0 in favor of the Mavericks.

The second half was a different story as Ft. Lewis changed the momentum of the game by dominating a good portion of the possession and created quality chances against the Mavs.  They broke through with four minutes to play when a cross was played nicely in the box to easily beat MSC GK Chris Raines.  The game seemed doomed to end 1-1, but in the final minute of play a turnover by the Skyhawks and a strong challenge by the Mavs Brandon Burton set him free down the sideline.  After beating a Ft. Lewis defender Burton was able to play the ball across the box to Marco Angelo who one timed a shot into the upper corner from 20 yards out to seal the Mavs win 2-1!

In the Mavs second game of the day against Weber state, MSC played to a hard fought 0-0 tie against the team from Ogden, Utah. The Mavericks created chances but were unable to put any shot past the Weber State goalie.  The Mavs held a majority of the possessions, but chances for both teams were few and far between.  Despite the tie it was a strong overall performance on the day by Mesa State.

The Mavs continue their spring schedule with a home game Saturday April, 24 against Garden City Community College.   Kick-off is 6:00 PM and admission is free.
