Mike Dominguez, Central Region Player of the Year, was named to the Central Region All-Tournament Team. Dominguez was the only player named to the team not in the championship game. MSC fell to Augustana College in the semifinal round of the Central Region tournament in Mankato, Minn. Sunday night. In the title game Tuesday night St. Cloud State defeated Augustana College in overtime 84-75. St. Cloud will represent the Central Region in the Elite Eight March 24-27 in Springfield, Mass.
Dominguez led all players in the eight team regional averaging 30 points per game. He was second overall in total points scored with 60 (two games played). St. Cloud’s Matt Schneck, selected Most Outstanding Player, scored 61 points in three games. Schneck was second behind Dominguez in points per game averaging 20.3 ppg.
Dominguez was perfect at the free throw line (19-19) and tied at the top in free throw percentage (1.000). Eight different players shot 100 percent from the free throw line. The next highest total was two players hitting 6 of 6 from the foul line.
Mike led the tournament in steals per game with 2.5 and was tied for second with five steals in two games.
He was third in field goals made (17) and fourth in 3-point field goals made. Teammate Brian Kenshalo was second overall in 3-point field goals made (9).
Dominguez led all players in individual game highs with his 41 points in the semifinal loss to Augustana. RMAC foe New Mexico Highlands’ Roman Andrade was second with 25 points. Dominguez’s individual game highs included field goals made (13-Augustana), field goal attempts (24-Augustana) and free throw percentage (10-10-Augustana).
MSC finished the year 23-6 and won its first ever NCAA Division II tournament game Saturday night against Winona State. MSC clinched the RMAC regular season title and were ranked as high as No. 9 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Poll (NABC) during the season.
