Grand Canyon got a major decision at 133 from 7th ranked Todd Wilcox and 184 from Ryan Becerra. Wilcox's win came against Maverick freshman Chris Rubalcaba. Wilcox dominated the match from start to finish in the 14-2 win. Wilcox's record goes to 31-2 while Rubalcaba's falls to 16-10.
'Lope Ryan Becerra got a 10-2 decision over Mesa State's Chris Cielinski at 184 pounds. Becerra's record improves to 13-6 while Cielinski's falls to 3-10.
The Mavericks were in the dual thanks in large part to 2 pins. The first came at 149 pounds where freshman Tyler Juby stuck Grand Canyon's Daniel Rubio in 2:20. Juby's record goes to 9-5 while Rubio's falls to 8-18.
The Mavericks second pin came at 197 when Shane Miller pinned 'Lope Kevin Treftz in 4:18. Miller was losing at the time when a reversal into a cradle got Treftz into trouble. Miller's record is now 12-12 and Treftz falls to 11-17.
5th ranked Chase Walker fell in a tough match tonight to Grand Canyon's Stephen Towne, 7-3. Towne came into the match with a record of 25-6 and came away with the upset. Walker's record is now 14-5.
The match that made the difference in the final score came at 141 pounds. GCU's Kyle Wilson scored a reversal with 3 seconds remianing in the match to take the win away from freshman Trevor Donarski, 8-7.
The Mavericks will be back in action Saturday night as they take on the Eagles of Chadron State College. The 'Faculty Night' dual will commence at 7:00pm.
