Mesa State men’s tennis team won 5 of 6 singles matches in a 7-2 win over Montana State Billings in round one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.
The Mavericks number 1 and 2 doubles team began the dual match with victories. All-conference number one doubles team of Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza led the way with an 8-2 win over Delbert Landicho and Luis Olivera. MSC’s number 1-5 singles posted victories to advance the team to the semifinal round.
In the semifinal round Friday afternoon #1 seed Metro State shutout the Mavericks 5-0. The Roadrunners took a commanding 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles matches. Chomko and Provenza lost a close match (8-6) and MSC’s #2 team of Rashad Khamis and Niko Carrizo fell in a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-4).
Metro maintained the momentum closing out the match with victories at number 1 and 6 singles.
Regionally ranked #5 in the latest poll, MSC will found out Tuesday when the NCAA Division II tournament bracket is released.
