Jordan Chomko reaches singles round of 16, doubles semi-finalist

Mesa State men’s tennis team advanced their number one and number two doubles team to the semi-finals of the ITA Central Regional Tennis Tournament in Kearney, NE., 

MSC’s number one team and defending ITA champion Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza were defeated by Western New Mexico’s Yair Banuelos and Kyle Lynch, 8-6. Chomko and Provenza were seeded number three in the 32-team field. Banuelos and Lynch were the number two seed.

The Mavericks number two doubles team of Rashad Khamis and Niko Carrizo, seeded number four, fell to the number one seed and eventual winner, Metro State’s Scott Bradley and Georgie Perez, 8-3.

In the singles draw of 64 the Mavericks had five players advance to the round of 16. Number three seed Jordan Chomko fell in a third set super tie-break (6-3, 5-7, 2-10) to Yoeir Van Speybroeck (WNMU). Nick Provenza lost runner-up Kyle Lynch (WNMU) 6-3, 6-2. Rashad Khamis lost to number six seed CSU-Pueblo’s Ricardo Oaxaca 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Brason Hollabaugh fell to number four seed Scott Bradley (Metro) and Andres Hernandez lost to number eight seed Rodrigo Duncan (UNK) 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Matt Searle won the singles consolation bracket with four victories (8-game pro sets) defeating Western New Mexico’s Devin Stroman 8-3 in the finals.
