Junior Jeremy Ensley (Wilder, ID) placed third in the 125 Elite bracket at the Wyoming Cowboy Open in Laramie Saturday afternoon. Ensley, wrestling un-attached received a first round bye before losing to Cory Borges from Montana State Northern in a decision 6-3. Ensley won his next four rounds including a 6-5 decision over Borges in the match for third place. Ensley beat Devlon Webb (Chadron State) 2-1, Kyle Middlemist (Univ. Great Falls), 10-3 and Sean Costell0 (un-attached) 13-2 before taking out Borges in the third place match.
Freshman James Breidel (Highlands Ranch, CO) finished in the top four in the 197 amateur bracket winning three consecutive matches after dropping his first round match to eventual winner Micah Burak 11-2. Breidel pinned (2:25) Cody Bloom (Idaho State), defeated Mark Jones (Northwest Wyoming CC) 8-5, pinned (6:39) Mike Malone (Western Wyoming), before falling in the third place match to Justin McKain 11-4.
Steven Reynolds (RFr, Grand Junction, CO) won his first two rounds in the amateur 125 lb. bracket with victories over Dusty Hass (Chadron State) 17-0 and Matt Sencebaugh (Stanford) 11-4. Reynolds fell to Mark Molina (NM Highlands) in the consolation bracket 9-2.
Matthew Chavez (Fr., Fort Morgan, CO) won two rounds in the 157 amateur bracket with an 8-3 decision over Mark Hobson (Montana State Northern) and a major decision, 17-6 over Drew Comito (un-attached). Chavez won a major decision, 12-4 against Corey Woodruff (Northwest Wyoming CC) before falling to eventual third place finisher, Tyler Davis (Wyoming) 13-3.
In the 174 lb., amateur division freshman Luke Laurita (Delta, CO) defeated Cole Bausch (Univ. Great Falls) 8-3 in round one and dropped a close 3-0 decision to eventual third place finisher, Brice Wolf. Laurita won two consolation rounds, 4-2 and 6-4 over Garrett Stowall (Colorado) and Levi Holt (Boise State) respectively. He lost to semi-finalist Ryan Swanson 7-6.
Sophomore Mike White (Brighton, CO) pinned his first round opponent in the 149 lb. Elite division, Jack Goodrich (Montana State Northern) in 3:16. He won an 7-4 decision in round two over Brian Easterling (Chadron State). Josh Beeman (Univ. Great Falls) defeated White 6-4, dropping him to the consolation bracket where he went 1-1. White won a 5-4 decision over Max Rosefigura (Stanford) before falling to Justin Morris (Western State) 4-1.
Competing in the 157 Elite division Chase Walker (Morgan, Utah) defeated a technical fall (15-0) over Nick Konen (Hastings) and a 9-2 decision over Ryan Sprackling (Colorado Mines) in round two. Brock Smith (Wyoming) knocked Walker in to the consolation bracket with a 3-1 decision in the semifinal round. Walker defeated Joseph Stafford (Air Force) due to an injury and beat Justin Gaethje (un-attached) 3-1. Noomis Jones (Adams State) who eventually went on to place third pinned Walker in the following round.
Junior Shane Miller (Gardnersville, NV) advanced to the semifinals in the Elite 197 lb. division. Miller defeated Alex Calvi (Univ. Great Falls) 2-1 and David Garcia (un-attached) 5-3. In the semifinal match up Miller lost in overtime 20-18 to Evan Mattingly (un-attached).
Mesa State will travel to Greeley, CO for the Old Chicago Open hosted by the University of Northern Colorado on Sunday, November 23.
